 The peas are harvested and dried. After drying the dull-colored outer skin of the pea is removed. Then it is split in half by machine or by hand.

Split peas are low in fat and high in protein. Split peas have the highest amount of dietary fiber.

How to cook green split peas?

For cooking, combine green split peas with around three times the amount of water and boil it. After boiling lower the heat and cover it. After around 30 mins cooking will be finished. Split peas should be soft.

Green split pea soup

Ingredients

1 tbsp oil

2 bay leaves

Peppercorns

1 tsp salt

Ground black pepper to taste

Green onion dill or parsley, for garnish

1 tsp smoked paprika for vegetarian version only

2 cups green split peas rinsed & drained

1-2 lbs turkey chicken or ham bone

1 large onion finely chopped

2 large carrots chopped

3 large celery stalks chopped

8 cups water or low sodium veggie broth 

Directions

Step1: Heat the oil in a large pot and add celery, carrots, and onion. Saute for 5mins.

Step2: Add water or vegetable broth (can add soup bones/ meat) bay leaves, peppercorns. Bring it to boil 

Step3: Add split peas and salt. Lower the flame and cook for 1-1.5 hours ( until peas partially break down)

Step4: Season with pepper and garnish with green onion or parsley. Serve it


Slow cooker green split pea recipe

2 cups Water

½ tsp Salt

1 cup Green Split Peas

Directions

Step1:  Before cooking rinse split peas. In a slow cooker add 1 cup of green split peas, 2 cups of water, and 1/2 tsp of salt 

Step2: Cover it and cook on low flame for 3-4 hours or on high flame for 2 hours

1 tablespoon olive oil

2 cup finely chopped celery

1 teaspoon salt

11/2 teaspoons salt-free seasoning blend

8 cups fat-free chicken broth

1 cup green split peas

1/2 tablespoon minced garlic

Directions

Step1: In a dutch oven or large pot heat the olive oil on the medium flame

Step2: Add onion, carrot, garlic, and celery. Cook until translucent

Step3: Add green split peas, salt, seasoning, and broth. Cover it and bring it to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 2 1/2 hours.

Step4: Blend it with a blender or food processor

Step5: Heat it again and serve

Green split pea soup

Ingredients:

1 cup carrots, diced

Salt, to taste

Juice from half a lemon (optional)

2 tablespoons olive oil

6 cups water, or stock

2 medium onions, chopped

2 dried bay leaves

Freshly ground pepper

2 cups green split peas, picked through and rinsed

Directions

Step1: Heat the olive oil on medium flame in a pan. Add onion and cook until they soften

Step2: Add bay leaves, water, split peas, and carrots. Boil it and simmer for 25 mins. (until peas partially split)

Step3: Add salt to taste (can add more water if the soup is thick)

Step4: Puree the soup, reserving about ¼ of the soup for a chunkier consistency. Add lemon juice and black pepper. Serve it

Lebanese Green Split Pea Soup

Ingredients

1 tbsp olive oil

6 cloves garlic minced

2 tsp ground cumin

1/2 tsp ground black pepper

1 tsp cayenne pepper (reduce if sensitive to spice)

3 medium-sized gold potatoes peeled

1 yellow or white onion diced

3 cups low-sodium vegetable broth

1 and 1/4 cups green split peas

3 stalks celery diced

juice of 1 lemon

za'atar (optional, for serving)

1/4 cup chopped flat-leaf parsley (optional)

Directions

Step1: In a large saucepan add green split peas and boil for 15 minutes. Drain and set aside. 

Step2: Add peeled potatoes to a saucepan and boil for 7 minutes. Drain and set aside

Step3: Heat the olive oil in a large saucepan. Add onion and garlic. Saute it for 5 mins

Step4: Add cayenne, pepper, and cumin. Stir it until onions turn slightly brown

Step5: Add vegetable broth, celery, split peas, and potatoes. Boil it and add parsley if using. Cook until potatoes, and split peas are cooked.

Step6: Turn off the heat and blend it in a blender. Heat it again and add lemon juice, salt to taste

Step7: Topped if desired and serve hot ( you can add water according to your desired consistency)

Split pea soup

Ingredients

2 bay leaves

Kosher salt

3 stalks celery, diced

2 tablespoons unsalted butter

1 medium yellow onion, diced

1 tablespoon fresh thyme leaves

Freshly ground black pepper

2 cups dried green split peas

3 medium carrots, peeled and sliced or diced

6 cups low-sodium chicken or vegetable broth

1 smoked ham hock or ham bone, or 1/4 teaspoon smoked paprika

Directions

Step1: On a medium flame melt the butter in a large pot. Add onion, carrots, celery, and cook until onions softened. 

Step2: Add thyme, bay leaves, and season with pepper and salt. Add split peas and mix them.

Step3: Now add broth and ham hock or ham bone, and boil it

Step4: Lower the heat and simmer for 1 hour.  Transfer the ham onto a cutting board and let cool slightly. Remove the meat from the bones, shred, and stir back into the soup

Step5: Season with salt and pepper. Remove the bay leaves before serving

Crispy split peas

Ingredients

1/4 tsp chili powder

1/4 tsp paprika

1 tbsp olive oil

1/2 tsp salt

1/2 tsp cumin

2/3 cup split peas soaked for 4 hours in the water

Directions

Step1: After soaking the split peas, drain them and then pat them dry using a paper towel

Step2: Over medium-high heat, coat a large skillet with the oil.

Step3: Once the pan is hot, add the split peas along with the salt and seasoning and stir frequently until golden in color and crunch in texture (7-10 minutes)

Step4: Remove from pan and serve or store in an airtight container


Split pea soup

2 bay leaves

Kosher salt

1 medium yellow onion  

2 large shallots, minced

2 tbsp. extra virgin olive oil, divided

1 (1 lb.) smoked ham hock

Freshly ground black pepper

1 lb. dried green split peas

8 c. low-sodium chicken broth

2 sprigs of fresh thyme, plus more for garnish

2 medium leeks (white and pale green parts only), thinly sliced

Directions

Step1: Heat 1tablespoon oil in a pan and add a ham hock. Cook until golden on all sides (about 6 mins)

Step2: Remove the ham hock and add the remaining oil to a pot. Now add leeks, onion, shallots, and season with salt and pepper. Cook until tender

Step3: Add chicken stock, split peas, thyme, bay leaves, ham hock, and bring it to boil. Cook until peas are tender ( about 1 hour)

Step4: After that remove thyme, bay leaf, and ham hock. Remove any meat from the ham hock and shred. Blend 1/4 of soup.

Step5: Pour pureed soup and shredded ham hock into a pot. Season to taste with pepper and salt. Garnish it and serve

Parker's Split Pea Soup

Ingredients

1/2 teaspoon dried oregano

1-1/2 teaspoons kosher salt

1 pound dried split green peas

1 cup chopped yellow onions

2 cloves garlic, minced

1/8 cup good olive oil

8 cups chicken stock or water 

1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

2 cups medium diced carrots (3 to 4 carrots)

1 cup medium-diced red boiling potatoes, unpeeled (3 small)

Directions

Step1: Heat the oil and add garlic, onion, oregano, pepper, salt, and cook until onions are translucent. (10-15mins)

Step2: Add potatoes, carrot, chicken stock, and 1/2 pounds of split peas. Boil it and simmer for 40 mins. (uncover)

Step3: Add the remaining split peas and simmer for another 40 mins.

Step4: Add salt to taste and pepper. Serve it
